External Hemorrhoids: Treating Them Effectively

Thursday, May 26, 2011

Hemorrhoids are distended and inflamed veins that develop due to excessive straining or pressure. Internal hemorrhoids occur inside the rectum and external hemorrhoids grow on the skin surrounding the anus. Pregnant women and people over the age of 50 are the people most at risk for developing this issue. The symptoms include bright streaks of blood on your fecal matter, itching, swelling and discomfort in the rectal area. They are also seen as fleshy and tender lumps around the anus.

When it develops internally the hemorrhoid is usually painless and won’t cause any suffering. However when the thin surface is damaged by passing stool, bleeding occurs.

Hemorrhoids that develop externally may bleed when irritated. Pain occurs when a blot clot forms and the clot can increase swelling. A doctor can relieve this by making a small incision to get rid of the clot. At home you can make a few changes to manage the uncomfortable situation. Use creams that have witch hazel or hydro-cortisone on the swollen area. Perform hydrotherapy through sitz baths. This involves sitting on a shallow pan of water for 15 minutes to soothe the irritated tissue. It is also beneficial to take fiber supplements or eat foods rich in fiber to make passing stool easier.
